Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing Explained

DNA Diagnostic Center (DDC) offers the Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test, a highly-accurate paternity test that can determine an unborn child’s biological father as early as 7 weeks gestation.

How Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) Testing Works

This advanced DNA test requires only a blood sample from the mother (collected at one of 5000+ clinic locations) and a simple cheek swab from the possible father. The clinic will send the mother’s blood sample to the DDC lab, where the free-floating fetal DNA cells will be extracted and analyzed. From there, our expert technicians will compare the baby’s DNA to the DNA of the potential father(s) to determine if a match exists.

AABB-Accredited Results

DDC’s Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test is the only paternity test of its kind accredited by the AABB. AABB is the global leader in standards development, accreditation, and implementation of quality systems in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. AABB has an unwavering focus on donor and patient safety through its accreditation process.

Only DDC maintains such strict standards of accountability for prenatal DNA paternity testing, including analysis, PhD review, and documentation. This is the first AABB-accredited NIPP test and we’re the only lab to offer it.

NIPP Testing is Safe For Both Mom and Baby

Prior to our NIPP test, the only options for determining paternity while pregnant were amniocentesis and CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling). These tests are invasive and have the potential to cause miscarriage. Because of their invasive nature, most doctors do not offer these tests anymore for determining paternity alone.

Fortunately, advances in DNA technology have brought about Certainty™, a completely safe, non-invasive prenatal paternity test that provides paternity answers earlier than ever.

How It Works: Getting the Certainty™ Paternity Test While Pregnant

We make it easy by managing the entire process for you with flexible options to meet your needs. Follow our step-by-step instructions below to get started with your Certainty™ Paternity Test:

Inheritance Rights

Sometimes, as in the case of the late singer Prince, there are situations where inheritance rights are in dispute. The alleged heir may be known or unknown, a minor or an adult, and the rights may or may not be in dispute.

Whatever the case, a legal DNA paternity test (or maternity test, if the mother is deceased) can quickly and efficiently put any doubts to rest, ensure that the right people receive what is rightfully theirs, and make certain that everyone involved is treated fairly. And by doing a legal test, the results are court-admissible, should the situation require it.

  1. Call our prenatal paternity specialists for a free no-obligation consultation
    1. They will help you locate your nearest testing facility and schedule an appointment for the mother and possible father. Separate appointments can be arranged, if desired.
  2. At the clinic, the mother’s blood is drawn and the possible father’s DNA is collected via cheek swab.
  3. Our specialized lab isolates the baby’s DNA from the mother’s and a DNA profile for the unborn child is obtained.
    1. DNA from the baby is contained in the mother’s blood stream.
    2. That DNA profile is then compared with both the father’s and the mother’s, and a probability of paternity is established.
  4. Once testing is complete, typically within 3-5 days, we will send you an email.
    1. Just log in to our secure website to view your results. The baby’s gender can be reported also, if you wish.

The Benefits of Paternity Testing While Pregnant

Some of the benefits of non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) testing include eliminating the stress of not knowing who the father is, making sure the right person is there to support you through your pregnancy and delivery, and being able to begin legal arrangements, including child support and custody.

Quick Facts about the Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test

  • The mother must be at least 7 weeks pregnant.
  • The Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test is endorsed by the American Pregnancy Association.
  • A paternity test while pregnant is not an option for a woman carrying multiple fetuses (twins or triplets) because current technology does not permit the isolation of multiple babies’ DNA profiles.
  • The medical facility that collected samples works directly with the DDC lab to get the samples processed and analyzed. Results are generally returned in about one week (7 business days, with faster results available for an additional fee).
  • The results of your Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test can be used in court or for legal matters, since DNA collection was witnessed.

Frequently Asked Questions about NIPP Testing

Some frequently asked questions about NIPP testing include:

Can you get a paternity test while pregnant?

Yes, you can get a paternity DNA test while pregnant with the safe and patented Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test from DDC. With DDC’s NIPP test, you can determine the paternity of your unborn baby as early as 7 weeks into your pregnancy.

What does “non-invasive” mean?

Will a previous pregnancy affect the outcome of a test?

No, a previous pregnancy will not affect the outcome of a non-invasive prenatal paternity test.

    Dear DDC,
I am seven months pregnant and I am uncertain as to who is the father of my unborn child. I have one child already, a little boy, and I believe my son’s father is likely the father to my unborn daughter. If I am not able to secure a blood sample or check swab from the potential father who has gone miss the past four months could I use a check swab from my son to get any clarity on the pregnancy? Thank you for your response.

Hi, Erica. That’s an excellent question. We can only test with samples from the alleged father and mother for the Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test. After your baby is born, however, we can do a sibling test. Our best wishes for a safe arrival for you and your little one!

      Hi, Nik!
You can do a postnatal test (either an at-home or a legal one) also, but it’s not necessary to confirm results. There are specific metrics we follow to ensure accurate results, and if those metrics are not met, then we do not issue a report. Ours is the only NIPP test on the market that’s been validated and published.

Has there ever been a situation that a NIPP test was wrong??

        • DDC

It’s never wise to speak in absolutes, but I will say certainly not in the last couple of years. The latest technology is incredibly precise, making today’s analysis extremely accurate and reliable. In fact, when a highly-accredited lab like DDC does a NIPP and it’s a legal (chain-of-custody) test, results are accepted in a court of law.

I had a non-invasive DNA paternity test done at 8 weeks gestation. The two potential fathers had cheek swabs and I also had a cheek swab. The test was done in a lab in Canada. How accurate can a lab in Canada be ? The court is requesting another paternity test because it wasn’t done in the U.S. Should I have the blood test done ? My baby is now 8 months old.

    • DDC

Hi, Patricia, and thanks for reaching out. Yes, you need to have a legal test done by an AABB-accredited lab. This is a witnessed test arranged by the lab to ensure an intact chain-of-custody every step of the way, from DNA collections to sample-submission to testing. We are a trusted lab for these services and will be happy to help you. Now that your baby is born, no blood sample is required: all samples, including the baby’s, are collected via cheek swab. Please give us a call at 800-681-7162 to get started.
Your story is a cautionary one for people looking to take a non-invasive prenatal paternity test. The best prenatal tests use a blood sample from the mother in order to best capture the free-floating DNA from the fetus and ensure accurate results. DDC’s prenatal paternity test is the only one that is validated and published. When having a prenatal DNA test done, does the father have to submit to the testing right away, or will they be able to hold the blood sample from the mother to test with the father on a later date?

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, Jay. There is a 7-10 day window of opportunity for testing after the mother’s blood is drawn. So her sample is sent to the lab right away and analyzed to profile her DNA and the unborn child’s. The possible father’s sample can arrive at a later date, within a reasonable period of time. You’re welcome to contact us directly for more information at 800-681-7162.

Hi, Danielle. Paternity tests are not covered by insurance, since they’re voluntary tests that aren’t medically necessary. You may want to wait and do the test after your baby’s born, which doesn’t cost as much. I hope everything goes well for you and your little one!

In my case, there is a doubt in the acceptance of the pregnancy a lady seems and claims to have for me. Her frivolous ways has painted the situation black, of which I am not standing to accept any responsibility of the child. But to clear doubting minds and thoughts, suggestions has been raised to go for checks and probably a DNA even before her delivery. She is entering into her 6 months soon. On my submission what advice can be rendered as to certainty and about test to go for.

Hi, Bora Kay. I’m sorry you’re going through such stress. If you want to test before the birth of the child, then the Non-Invasive Pre-Natal Paternity test mentioned in this article is the best choice. The results are guaranteed accurate (no follow-up paternity test after the baby’s born is needed). Does this answer your question?

Hi, Stacy. If the mother refuses, then a possible father can petition the courts for a paternity test. If the court deems he has grounds to ask for one, then they may order it.

Okay my fiance has been getting a lot of tests done early in her/ this pregnancy. We are high risk with her being 38. I have my doubts about this time due to issues we have had. I know she has had amniocentesis test run and a bunch of other stuff. She says the baby is healthy and fine. We had a baby 2 yrs ago at 36 and I don’t remember any of this being done. What do I do to find out if my concerns are reasonable?

    Reply
    • DDC

Hi, J. If the doctor has kept amniotic fluid from your fiancee’s test and it hasn’t been too long since the test, then we can definitely do a paternity test from that fluid. If that’s not a possibility, you can do a non-invasive prenatal paternity test as described in this article. If she doesn’t want to do a paternity test while pregnant, you can wait until the baby’s born and do a paternity test using the baby’s and your cheek cells (via a painless swab). All of these options are guaranteed accurate and can give you the answers you’re looking for. I hope this answered your question. If not, feel free to reach out again.

Can you do a paternity test on my unborn child if the father has passed away? Needing the test done so I can add the father of my child to her birth certificate.

Hi I would like to know the cost and what is needed.

Hi, Polene. The test requires a small blood sample from the mother and a cheek-swab sample from the possible father. We do not put pricing in blog comments, since the price may change in the future. If you are in the United States, you are welcome to contact us for a free consultation at 800-929-0847. If you are not in the U.S.A, email [email protected].

Are you able to use hair sample or toothbrush or something from potential father (instead of a Buccal swab)?

          Reply
          • DDC

Hi, Lexi. We don’t recommend it because there often isn’t enough DNA on those types of samples to complete paternity testing. The requirement for hair is a minimum of 10 strands with the roots, for example. There is also an additional non-refundable $150 fee to perform viability testing to see whether or not the sample submitted can even be used.
