Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Testing Explained
DNA Diagnostic Center (DDC) offers the Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test, a highly-accurate paternity test that can determine an unborn child’s biological father as early as 7 weeks gestation.
How Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) Testing Works
This advanced DNA test requires only a blood sample from the mother (collected at one of 5000+ clinic locations) and a simple cheek swab from the possible father. The clinic will send the mother’s blood sample to the DDC lab, where the free-floating fetal DNA cells will be extracted and analyzed. From there, our expert technicians will compare the baby’s DNA to the DNA of the potential father(s) to determine if a match exists.
AABB-Accredited Results
DDC’s Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test is the only paternity test of its kind accredited by the AABB. AABB is the global leader in standards development, accreditation, and implementation of quality systems in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies. AABB has an unwavering focus on donor and patient safety through its accreditation process.
Only DDC maintains such strict standards of accountability for prenatal DNA paternity testing, including analysis, PhD review, and documentation. This is the first AABB-accredited NIPP test and we’re the only lab to offer it.
NIPP Testing is Safe For Both Mom and Baby
Prior to our NIPP test, the only options for determining paternity while pregnant were amniocentesis and CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling). These tests are invasive and have the potential to cause miscarriage. Because of their invasive nature, most doctors do not offer these tests anymore for determining paternity alone.
Fortunately, advances in DNA technology have brought about Certainty™, a completely safe, non-invasive prenatal paternity test that provides paternity answers earlier than ever.

Inheritance Rights
Sometimes, as in the case of the late singer Prince, there are situations where inheritance rights are in dispute. The alleged heir may be known or unknown, a minor or an adult, and the rights may or may not be in dispute.
Whatever the case, a legal DNA paternity test (or maternity test, if the mother is deceased) can quickly and efficiently put any doubts to rest, ensure that the right people receive what is rightfully theirs, and make certain that everyone involved is treated fairly. And by doing a legal test, the results are court-admissible, should the situation require it.
- Call our prenatal paternity specialists for a free no-obligation consultation
- They will help you locate your nearest testing facility and schedule an appointment for the mother and possible father. Separate appointments can be arranged, if desired.
- At the clinic, the mother’s blood is drawn and the possible father’s DNA is collected via cheek swab.
- Our specialized lab isolates the baby’s DNA from the mother’s and a DNA profile for the unborn child is obtained.
- DNA from the baby is contained in the mother’s blood stream.
- That DNA profile is then compared with both the father’s and the mother’s, and a probability of paternity is established.
- Once testing is complete, typically within 3-5 days, we will send you an email.
- Just log in to our secure website to view your results. The baby’s gender can be reported also, if you wish.
The Benefits of Paternity Testing While Pregnant
Some of the benefits of non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) testing include eliminating the stress of not knowing who the father is, making sure the right person is there to support you through your pregnancy and delivery, and being able to begin legal arrangements, including child support and custody.
Quick Facts about the Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test
- The mother must be at least 7 weeks pregnant.
- The Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test is endorsed by the American Pregnancy Association.
- A paternity test while pregnant is not an option for a woman carrying multiple fetuses (twins or triplets) because current technology does not permit the isolation of multiple babies’ DNA profiles.
- The medical facility that collected samples works directly with the DDC lab to get the samples processed and analyzed. Results are generally returned in about one week (7 business days, with faster results available for an additional fee).
- The results of your Certainty™ Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity test can be used in court or for legal matters, since DNA collection was witnessed.

My daughter had sex on the 14th, ovulating on the 15th and sex on the 16th. Unsure which man she is pregnant by?
Hi, Dedra. A prenatal paternity test can help answer that question once your daughter is at least 7 weeks’ pregnant.
I have been there with one of the alleged father, so he and I only got tested. The question still is in my head, I didn’t test the other possible father since they are both Europeans and same age, very similar. if is possible something it could be wrong? I’m very concern about this situation, there’s is no more time left and money for it. Is the test-specific for each person? or for a group of similar race? I need to know this Asap!
Hi, Niki. A paternity test doesn’t test for age, and the only thing race is used for is to help determine the strength of the data at each genetic location, based on the data’s prevalence for that racial group. However, each genetic marker is compared to the same genetic marker between possible father and the child. Each person has a different genome, and the two possible fathers in your case would not match up at every location tested. So only one of them can be the father of the child. No worries!
Once samples have been collected how long does it take to receive results? Are Christmas eve and day considered working business days?
Hi, Romey. For a non-invasive prenatal test, results are posted in 3-5 business days once samples arrive at the lab. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are not business days for us. Any report that would normally be due during this 2-day time period are delayed till the next business day, which would be December 26.
Why can’t DNA from my 3 year child old be used instead of the potential father? I don’t want the potential father to know that I need a paternity test for my fetus. Does your company have this requirement for legal reasons or for scientific reasons?
Hi, N. Your child’s DNA could be used to see if the two children share the same biological father, once your baby is born. For prenatal testing, only the alleged father’s sample can be used right now. And yes, it is for scientific reasons.
Are y’all located in Maryland ?
Hi, Chris. Our DNA lab is located in Cincinnati and all testing is performed here, but we have DNA-collection facilities near you in Maryland, including an AABB-accredited office in Baltimore.
Hi i’m from South Africa ….just wanted to know if i can do a NIPP test here in South Africa and how much does it cost?
Hi, Julia. Yes, you can. Please contact our affiliate in South Africa; you can do so by using the form on the following page to email, or you can call them directly at the number on the page during business hours.
I did a prenatal paternity test with dnaforce from cananda, it was DDC’s lab that did the test
At 9 weeks they took a blood sample from me + a cheek swab from alleged father. The results came back that there was not enough fetal dna in my blood and I had to retake a blood sample 2 weeks after that. They did not retake a cheek swab they said it wasn’t necessary since they already had it… The test came back excluding the alleged father 0% … Is there any possibility that there could be an error ? since he did not resend a cheek swab ? I am happy with the results I didn’t want him to be the father but now that my due date is arriving I am feeling really stressed … and imagining the worst … need some reassurance
Hi, Emilie. You can put your mind at ease. There is no need to retake the alleged father’s DNA since we already had his data on file and ready to compare to your new sample. We wish you all the best and thank you for trusting us with your very important question.
I got a non invasive prenatal paternity DNA test done at 8 weeks.. what are the accuracy of that being correct with it being so early?
Hi, Samantha. I cannot speak to the accuracy of other companies’ prenatal paternity tests…only to ours, and you didn’t mention specifically with whom you tested. If you tested with us and received results, then there was enough data for conclusiveness. No worries!
I got 0% on a non invasive prenatal paternity test, has there every been any false negatives before? I am due soon and freak out about my test being incorrect at birth.
I cannot speak for the accuracy of other companies’ prenatal tests. But if you tested with DDC, you can be sure the results are accurate for the samples provided.
