How Much Does a Dog DNA Test Cost?

As a trusted provider of dog DNA tests, one of the first questions we get asked is, “How much does a dog DNA test cost?” When ordering an analysis for your pet or litter, of course you want to get the best possible price, but cost is not the only consideration. You should also ask the following:

  • Are test results accurate?
  • Do you stand behind your services?
  • Are results posted quickly?
  • Do you provide customer service?
  • Would your customers recommend you to their friends and family?

These questions are just as important as the cost of a DNA dog test, and if you test with DDC Veterinary, the answer to all of the questions is an enthusiastic “YES.” Here’s what you can expect to spend, so you can know going into the process how much a dog DNA test costs.

How Much Does a Dog DNA Test Cost?

Costs for high-quality dog DNA tests for a single animal range from $60 to $170 (and up, depending on the lab) when ordering directly from an accredited laboratory. A visit to the vet is not required since cheek-swab DNA sampling can be done at home, and discounts are generally offered when testing multiple dogs.

Here is a more detailed breakdown.

Inherited Disease Screening: Testing for genetic predisposition to diseases that are common to certain breeds, such as Degenerative Myelopathy, Exercise Induced Collapse, von Willebrand’s Disease Type 1, and more.

Dog Breed DNA Test: Do you ever get asked, “What breed is this dog?” DNA for pets with unknown histories can be analyzed against a database of DNA genotypes for hundreds of breeds, effectively identifying your pet’s ancestry going back several generations.

DDC Veterinary pricing: $89 per dog

In addition to offering everyday low-pricing, DDC Veterinary also runs monthly promotions for extra savings.

Keep in mind that ordering a DNA test through your veterinarian will most likely have added costs baked into the price, so it makes sense to test directly through the laboratory whenever possible. Be wary of prices from laboratories that appear “too low.” Sometimes that unrealistically-reduced price comes at the expense of the other important parts of testing listed at the top of this article. Remember, cost is important, but it’s not the only consideration when choosing a provider you can trust.

My dog got pregnant on accident- how and when can I tell what breed of dog she mated with?

Hi, Helainna. It is possible she may have become pregnant by multiple different dogs. You or the future owners can do a dog-breed identification test for each of the puppies once they are born. You should not assume the results would be the same for each puppy since they may have had different fathers.
