Bird DNA Sexing for Gender Determination

Avian DNA Gender Determination (bird sexing) is a non-surgical and DNA-powered method used by veterinarians, breeders, and bird owners who cannot determine the gender of their bird by its physical appearance or characteristics.

We use PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to detect the presence of male and female chromosomes in the bird’s DNA. You can collect a DNA sample by clipping the bird’s toenail (sample is collected onto a blood card), or you can pluck feathers from the bird’s breast. We’ll send you a complimentary DNA-collection kit of your choice when you order your test, or you can make your own DIY kit: Click for DIY instructions.

More About this Bird DNA Test

Q: Are results from feather and blood samples equally accurate?

A: Yes. DNA is the same no matter how it’s obtained. The choice of DNA-collection method for your bird DNA test really depends on what you’re most comfortable doing.

Q: How is blood collected from the bird’s toenail?

A: The bird’s nail is clipped at the base of the quick—just enough to nick the vein and spot a drop of blood on a blood card or non-absorbent piece of paper.

Q: How does feather DNA-collection work?

A: Chest feathers are collected by using tweezers to grab a feather at the base, and then plucking it. IMPORTANT: Molted feathers and blood feathers do not contain enough DNA for testing!

Q: How accurate are bird DNA tests?

A: Bird DNA tests are generally quite accurate, with accuracy rates often exceeding 99% when properly conducted. The reliability of the test depends on the quality of the sample and the testing methods used by the laboratory. These tests are commonly used for determining the sex of birds and identifying species, and they provide highly dependable results when handled by experienced professionals.

Q: How do you extract DNA from a bird?

A: DNA is typically extracted from a bird through non-invasive methods such as collecting blood samples, feathers, or even eggshells. Blood samples are usually obtained by a small prick on a vein, while feathers are collected from the bird’s body. The sample is then processed in a laboratory where the cells are broken down, and the DNA is isolated for testing.
