How Much Does a Paternity Test Cost?

How Much Is a Quality Paternity Test?

As one of the world’s most highly accredited and trusted DNA testing laboratories, people ask us, “How much does a paternity test cost?” every day. With the explosion of DNA testing providers in recent years, it’s easy for people who need a paternity test to get confused about which one they should choose.

For many people, price is the determining factor. But beware, as choosing the lowest-cost option can also compromise quality – which is essential for such an important test. There are companies on the internet that offer “cheap” DNA paternity tests, but if the price seems too good to be true, it very likely is.

Given that most people aim for accurate and reliable results at a reasonable cost, here’s a breakdown of price ranges you can expect for a quality paternity test.

How Much Does a Paternity Test Cost?

Home Paternity Test Cost

A quality paternity test for personal knowledge or peace of mind – also known as a home paternity test – typically costs anywhere from $130 to $200.

Legal Paternity Test Cost

A legal paternity test (with court-admissible results), typically costs $300 to $500. DDC’s legal paternity testing services include professional DNA collection, and can be utilized for a variety of purposes, including child support and custody cases, birth certificate changes, immigration, adoption, tax forms, inheritance rights and more.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity (NIPP) Test Cost

A non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) test – which allows you to determine the father of the child before birth – typically costs anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000.

NOTE: Paternity test prices can vary and additional features can be added, such as expedited testing.

What about Low-Cost Paternity Tests?

Many online companies appear legitimate, but outsource their tests to unregulated labs or ship your DNA samples out of the U.S. for cheaper processing. Be careful because cheap testing often means cheap testing methods — don’t take a chance on your life-changing paternity test.

What is the process for testing TWINS? ITS A CRYING SHAME MEN HAVE TO RESORT TO SOMETHING LIKE A TEST…….TOO BAD THE LAW CANT HOLD A WOMEN FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE WHEN THE TRUTH COMES OUT AFTER THE CHILDREN TURN 18……

Hi, Gerry. The process for testing twins is the same as testing a single child, however the pricing is going to be higher for twins than a single test since the lab would be answering two questions instead of one:
      (1) Does the man tested share a paternal relationship with Twin A? (2) Does the man tested share a paternal relationship with Twin B? For a free and confidential consultation give us a call at 800-929-0847 (M-F, 8 AM to 8 PM Eastern).

Should I sign the paternity affidavit before I order a court test? My ex girlfriend says the baby is mine but I’m not sure. He’s due in 2 months so I’m trying to get answers on how to proceed.

Hi, Andrew. It is best practice not to sign any acknowledgment of paternity before testing. In most states, you have up to 2 years after the baby is born to file a request for a test with the court.

Hi. I am in mourning since my sister passed away a couple of wks ago. After she was laid to rest someone contacted me about her being adopted & my sister being her Biological Mother. I was given a copy of her birth certificate & it has my sister name, woman’s DOB, place of birth etc. Everything matched up. I haven’t been able to mourn properly because a woman who was put up for adoption 46 yrs ago could possibly be my long lost niece. She definitely resembles my sister. I have absolutely no idea where to begin. Please assist

Hi, Lou. You could try one or several of the ancestry tests that makes DNA information public. It may be that your niece has performed this test and you may be able to identify her this way. Good luck!

How long is the DNA viable? If the alleged father does the swab and the kit isn’t sent in until a few days later and it takes a day to reach the lab will the results still be accurate?

Hi, Krin. Excellent question. If kept in a cool, dry place, DNA samples can actually remain viable for up to 6 months. No worries!

Hi, I’m in a unique situation where my son was born to a woman who was (at the time) married to another man. In my state, the law makes him the legal father of my son. I need to have a paternity test done so the court can determine if I’m the father before they will put my name on my sons birth certificate.

My son, I, and her ex-husband will need to test.

    Can you help?

Hi, William. Since child support ordered the testing, it was a legal test wherein IDs were checked, DNA collection was supervised, and a chain of custody was maintained. You can trust the results are accurate.
