Dog-parentage testing is fast, affordable, and accurate.
DDC uses a 16-DNA marker panel for routine parentage testing and keeps an additional 12 markers in reserve for extended testing in cases involving closely-related dogs. Both sire and dam samples are required for testing.
The testing fee is $38 per sample; for example, if a sire, dam and 1 progeny (puppy) are tested, the total fee for 3 dogs is $114.
You are emailed a detailed Parentage Report showing inclusion or exclusion of each sire tested along with a DNA Profile summary page. Results are reported as:
- Parentage qualifies (inclusion of sire and dam): both the sire and dam matched the progeny (puppy) at all 16 DNA markers
or
- Parentage does not qualify (exclusion of sire, dam is included) : the dam matched the progeny (puppy), but the possible sire did not match the progeny and is not the sire
DNA results are emailed within 10 business days, once all samples are received at the laboratory.
Your dog-parentage test kit includes:
- Sterile DNA-collection swabs
- Complete instructions

FAQs: Dog Parentage Test
Below, we’ve addressed a few questions concerning our dog DNA parentage test. Please let us know if you need additional information.
What Is Parentage Testing and Why Is It Necessary?
A dog parentage DNA test ensures you have accurate and reliable information, supporting responsible breeding and pedigree verification. Understanding your dog’s lineage can help prevent inbreeding, ensure responsible breeding practices, and provide insight into potential genetic health issues. For breeders, verifying parentage is essential to maintain the integrity of breeding programs and pedigrees. For pet owners, it provides peace of mind and helps them make informed decisions about their dog’s health and care.
How Much Is a DNA Test for a Dog?
Currently, the testing fee is $38 per sample; for example, if a sire, dam, and one progeny (puppy) are tested, the total cost for three dogs is $114. A typical test includes both parents; if the dam or sire is missing, please call us for more information about testing options.
Why Is The Dam's (Mother's) Sample Required for Parentage Verification?
A: Determining animal parentage relies on a method of inclusion and exclusion. Looking at just one parent’s information may not give the full picture and could lead to falsely including a sire that would be ruled out if the mother’s data was also considered.
By having the dam’s sample, our lab can easily identify the genetic markers the puppies have inherited from their mother. This leaves only the paternally inherited DNA markers for comparison, making the parentage verification process much more accurate.
That’s why DDC requires the dam’s sample for parentage testing. This extra information gives us the complete picture we need to provide you with the most precise results.
At What Age Can Testing Be Done?
Cheek-swab samples can be obtained from dogs of any age, even newborns or nursing puppies. If pups are nursing, separate them from the mother for about 30 minutes (long enough that they do not have milk in their mouth) before you swab them.
If My Dog Has Already Been DNA-Profiled Through DDC, Do I Need To Send Another Sample?
No, we can retrieve the DNA Profile information for dogs we have previously tested from our database. Provide the DNA ID number for that previously tested dog, and we can include it in a new evaluation. There is a $10 fee to include each previously tested profile in a new dog lineage case.
